I DO NOT support Mayor Nickels' decision to cut funding for The Sharehouse! Mayor Nickels is proposing to cut $70,000 from the City of Seattle's Human Services budget that supports The Sharehouse. The Sharehouse is King County's ONLY free furniture bank for formerly homeless families. Without receiving beds, chairs, lamps, blankets, and tables from The Sharehouse, homeless families will continue to be homeless: they will simply sleep on the floor instead of the street, and eat dinner around a cardboard box instead of a shelter table. (insert general client/agency story here, if applicable) Over 86 social service agencies in King County and 2,000 client families DEPENDED on The Sharehouse program for support this year alone. Cutting an agency like The Sharehouse from the Human Services budget will create a drain on already over-taxed social and homeless service providers, and will increase funding needs for emergency services and shelters as more families fail to receive adequate support when being placed in permanent housing the first time. The Sharehouse is a thoughtful, central, and inventive way of distributing donations to King County providers who seek to help their clients become successful and productive members of society.
